Help and answers for the How High Am I? iPhone app.
How does How High Am I? determine elevation?
The app uses your iPhone's native location and altitude sensors to estimate your elevation above sea level. Where the device has a barometer, barometric altitude changes are combined with location data so the number responds quickly when you actually change height.
Elevation is an estimate. How High Am I? is not intended for surveying, aviation, navigation, or other safety-critical use.
Why does my elevation move around?
Elevation accuracy varies with conditions, including:
- GPS signal quality and how much open sky the device can see
- Being indoors, underground, or among tall buildings
- Weather and air-pressure changes
- Differences between iPhone models and their sensors
When the reading is less reliable, the app says so rather than presenting an uncertain number as exact. For the steadiest results, step outside with a clear view of the sky and give it a few moments to settle.
Location permission
The app asks for Location While Using the App. This is required for the core feature — without it the app cannot determine your elevation. The app does not request background or “Always” location.
If you previously declined, you can enable it in the iOS Settings app under How High Am I? → Location, or use the “Open Settings” option shown in the app.
Motion permission
The app asks for Motion & Fitness access so it can use barometric altitude data. This makes elevation changes more responsive and stable on devices that support it. The app still works without it, using location data alone.
Personal High and High History
Your Personal High is the highest elevation you've recorded. High History lists your saved highs with the date and an approximate place name. Both are stored on your device only — there is no account and no cloud sync.
You can turn Auto Save Highs off in Settings. With it off, live elevation and achievements keep working, but Personal High and High History stop updating.
Achievements
There are nine altitude achievements, from your first eligible reading up through 20,000 feet, plus one for going below sea level. They unlock automatically when you reach a qualifying elevation with a good enough signal, and they stay unlocked.
Feet and meters
Switch units in Settings → Units. The choice applies everywhere: the main screen, Personal High, High History, achievement labels, and the cards you share.
Ads and Remove Ads
The free app shows a banner ad on the main elevation screen, High History, and Achievements. There are no ads on the welcome, loading, Settings, Privacy, or About screens, and no ads are added to your share cards.
Remove Ads is a one-time in-app purchase available in the app's Settings screen. The price shown in the app is the current price for your region as provided by Apple.
Restore Purchases
If you've bought Remove Ads and it isn't active — for example after reinstalling or on a new device — open Settings in the app and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account used for the original purchase.
